The School of Communication, Media & IT
The School of Communication, Media & IT (CMI), as part of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen, specialises in offering a wide range of multifaceted, innovative and internationally oriented bachelor programmes.
The international program Game Design (GD) is one of the three majors within the bachelor study Communication & Multimedia Design (CMD). Within GD, we train students as game designers, game artists, and game developers for the international creative industry. Through interactive workshops and real-world project cases, students learn how to analyse, design, develop, and evaluate both serious games and entertainment games in a realistic and professional setting.
While focusing on the body of knowledge and body of skills related to game design and development, we have four integrated learning lines embedded in the curriculum: Creative Design, 21st Century Skills, Design Research, and Technology. These learning lines are shared with Interaction Design and Visual Design, the other two major programs within CMD.
Currently we are working towards the development of a new bachelor programme: Creative Media & Game Technologies (CMGT). We aim to start this programme in September ’21. The programme will learn students more technical skills in the broad field of technology by using game techniques.
The research group User-Centered Design, linked to CMD, is concerned with integrating applied research into the topics relevant to the majors of CMD and CMGT. The programmes are closely linked to the research group, allowing new insights to be embedded into the curriculum and allowing students to work on relevant research and development cases.
