Monitoring the game industry in The Netherlands

Games Monitor 2024

The Games Monitor reports about the facts, trends, and developments in the Dutch games industry. On this page you’ll find the latest edition, the Games Monitor 2024, both as a short fact sheet and a full report. Below you can find previous editions of the report.

While game studios around the world have taken significant hits, the Dutch games sector saw its revenue grow by 10.5 percent between 2021 and 2023, reaching a record €763 million. The number of active companies increased slightly to 614, but the workforce shrank by 269 people to 4,291. Many jobs disappeared in the mid-sized segment. Employees are increasingly working for either very small or very large companies. Despite the positive figures, Dutch game companies are increasingly concerned.

The 2024 edition also pays attention to other topics such as the sentiment and use of generative AI, sustainability practices, and game educational programs. The Dutch Games Association is responsible for the execution of the Dutch Games Monitor. The 2022 edition, and those prior to that, were executed by Dutch Game Garden.

The Games Monitor is published every few years since 2012. The Games Monitor looks into the trends and developments for applied and entertainment games in the Netherlands, such as the number of companies, jobs, and game students. It was executed by Dutch Game Garden until the 2022 edition. From 2025 the Dutch Games Association is responsible for the execution of the Games Monitor.

Analysis of a survey and discussions with experts are used to provide an in-depth analysis of the challenges the industry faces in achieving growth. To put things into international perspective, the Games Monitor also compares some developments to other European countries.
