A Look Inside the Dutch Game Industry: Government Visit to Studio Deloryan

On the Day of the Entrepreneur (Fri, 15 Nov 2024), Studio Deloryan had the pleasure of welcoming member of parliament Rachel van Meetelen and other representatives from the Dutch government. Organised by the Dutch Game Association, the visit aimed to provide a behind-the-scenes look at our game studio while discussing the broader challenges and opportunities within the Dutch game industry.

From the moment they entered our studio, they were greeted not by formal handshakes or a stiff atmosphere, but by Mochi—our office dog. The tone was set for an informal and friendly visit, which immediately broke the ice. It became apparent that our guests appreciated the relaxed vibe and were animal lovers themselves. It was a refreshing change from the formal environments they’re used to.

An Open Discussion About Challenges and Opportunities

After the warm welcome, we explored the realities of running a game studio and the challenges facing the Dutch game industry as a whole. One issue briefly discussed was the shortage of internship opportunities and jobs. With more students entering game-related studies than there are studios to support them, many aspiring developers struggle to gain practical experience.

The conversation also touched on the recent closure of the Dutch Game Garden, which had been a central hub of the industry for 17 years. Through initiatives like the Indigo showcase and monthly networking lunches, the Dutch Game Garden connected studios, indie developers, and students, creating a vibrant hub for collaboration.

“The Dutch Game Garden was more than just a space—it was a hub that brought the industry together,” said Deloryan Hommers, founder and CEO of Studio Deloryan. “Its closure leaves a gap that will be hard to fill, especially for new and smaller developers looking to make connections or learn from others in the field.”

New initiatives are emerging, but they lack the centralised location and deep expertise that made the Dutch Game Garden so impactful. The conversation also touched on how the government could help address these gaps to ensure the industry remains competitive and continues to grow.

Inspiring the Next Generation

The visit ended on a creative note as we recorded videos for Doorpakkers, an online platform designed to inspire young people by showcasing a day in the life of professionals. Both our founder and team members stepped in front of the camera to share their experiences, challenges, and motivations.

“It was the first camera experience for many of us, but it was great to show what makes our work so special and what drives us every day,” said Deloryan. “Although it was a bit nerve-wracking for some, the team did an amazing job!”

These videos offer a unique behind-the-scenes look at our studio and highlight the creativity and passion that drives the game industry. These videos will soon be available on Doorpakkers’ social media channels, offering a little insight on the work we do.

A Day to Remember

Hosting representatives from the government was an enjoyable and valuable experience for Studio Deloryan. The informal setting helped us to have open discussions about the challenges we face as a studio and as part of the Dutch game industry.

“It’s not every day you get to discuss these issues directly with someone from the government,” said Deloryan. “It was inspiring to share ideas and explore how we can strengthen the industry together.”

We hope this visit contributes to greater recognition and support for the Dutch game sector, ensuring it continues to thrive in the future. It was a unique opportunity that we won’t forget!
