Dutch-Italian collaboration to create a game about doctor-patient communication

The DGA facilitated the Italian University of Parma in its search for a Dutch development studio. The university’s medical department was actively seeking a method to improve its students’ communication skills.

After some research, they found the Dutch market for applied games to be the best fit. Following conversations with the DGA’s own division manager for serious gaming, the DGA organised several rounds of talks between some of its members and the university’s project team. We can already announce that Game Tailors is exploring collaboration possibilities with Parma University!

The envisioned game will focus on avoiding medical jargon, while emphasising the importance of showing empathy and clearly explaining complex medical information. It will also include training in translating medical communication between Italian and English.

“We see this project as a way to truly make a difference. Communication is the foundation of any profession, but in healthcare, it can sometimes be a matter of life and death,” says Bowie Derwort, director of Game Tailors.

Healthcare professionals will be able to practise various scenarios in the game. The project also explores how players handle elements like time pressure, different input methods, speech recognition, and AI. The goal is to give players more insight into (un)clear communication and its impact on the patient.

The project is currently still in an exploratory phase. Development will begin in 2026.

“Although we’re starting small and simple, I see a lot of potential in this collaboration,” says Bowie. “I’m convinced we can develop an effective learning tool, and once we demonstrate its impact, much bigger opportunities will follow.”

To clarify: this entire facilitation process was 100% free of charge. At no point did the DGA receive any payment, goods or services, or other forms of compensation for its involvement.
